How to Support Your Friends or Family Members Who Are Eloping

Here is the situation: You just found out that someone close to you has chosen to elope instead of having a large, traditional wedding. You care about this wonderful person and want to show your support but, because you’re not super familiar with elopements, don’t quite know how to do that. That’s totally okay! I am here to help! Here are a few ways that you can be there for your amazing person when you won’t actually “be there.”

1) Verbally convey your excitement and acceptance

This is the most important way that you can support the people in your life that are eloping. They have chosen to elope because it is what feels right to them and will be an authentic reflection of their relationship. Many people who elope are nervous to tell their friends and family because they don’t want to offend them. Help alleviate this fear by making sure that you tell them just how thrilled you are that they are choosing such a rad way to commit to each other.

2) Write letters for them to read

Letters are such a beautiful way for you to share in your loved ones’ big day. Although you may not be physically there with them, this small token can be an amazing show of support. Not sure what to write in your letter? Consider all of the beautiful things that you would say to them in person (well wishes, advice, funny or heartwarming stories) and include those.

3) Make a video for them to watch

A lot like writing a letter, this video can showcase all of the heartfelt things that you want to tell them on their elopement day. Making an individual video or creating a video montage of all of their friends and family wishing them well can really pull on the heartstrings and be truly meaningful.

4) Donate to an adventure fund, experience, or trip

One huge reason that people elope is because they value experiences over things. For a traditional wedding, you would probably go onto their registry and pick out a gift. Most couples that elope don’t create a gift registry. If you are looking to give them something, consider putting money towards an adventure that they can share in the form of airline vouchers, gift cards to rental companies such as Airbnb or VRBO, or pulling together with others to fund a fun experience like rock climbing or skydiving.
